Srinakarin Dam – Kanchanaburi

by Dr. David

Srinakarin Dam , Srinakarin Dam is a big dam built over the Kwai River ( Kanchanaburi ), (which used to be called the Mae Klong River). The dam was built in order to avoid floods and ensure water and electricity supply to the area’s residents. The dam’s construction begun in 1974 and ended in 1980. The dam is 140 meters tall and 610 meters long. Its building cost the Thai government 114 million dollars. During low electricity consumption period, special pumps pump water from the lower level to the upper level, in order to create enough electricity for times of higher consumption.

The Srinakarin dam has been named after the queen mother and its surrounding park, Srinakarin National Park ( Kanchanaburi ) , is also called after the queen mother.

The dam building has created a huge lake containing up to 7.5 billion cubic meter of water. The lake is also a wonderful holiday and fishing area. You can find plenty of resorts and camping sites around the big lake.

The dam is located on Srinakarin National Park where there are caves, waterfalls and lots of walking treks. The huge lake created by the dam is a habitat for many species of plants and animals. The lake is well known for its abundance of fish and many fishing lovers go there to enjoy it as can be seen on this web site.

This is the time to mention Huai Mae Khamin Waterfalls, which are not very famous but are certainly very pretty, even prettier than the famous Erawan Waterfalls.
