Tham Lod / Mae Hong Son , Tham Lod (Lod cave) is one of the most impressive and interesting caves in Thailand. It is located halfway between the city of Pai and the town of Mae Hong Son (some 77 km away from the latter), in a district which belongs to Mae Hong Son, called Pang Mapha.
The cave is very large and stretches along 1.5 km. It contains 3 large halls – one of them towers to more than 50 meters high – with spectacular forms, 20-meter-high stalactites and stalagmites.
In some parts of the cave, runs the Lang river, so a part of the tour is carried out by sailing in bamboo rafts – which adds an adventurous feel to the experience. Throughout the tour, visitors climb up to different ‘rooms’, admire the beautiful shapes and forms and observe ancient coffins that were found in the cave.
An extensive tour through the dark cave takes some 2 hours so you must be accompanied by a local tour guide to lead and light up your way through the twists and turns of the spectacular cave. You may not enter without a local guide!
In the past, pre-historic remains were found in the cave – stone dishes and tools, residents’ remains and ancient coffins.
The entrance to the cave is through a specific opening, and the exit is from another one – where you’ll find yourself at the other side of the mountain, in a jungle. There, you can take a nice, easy walking track, which will get you back to the entrance/parking area.
Many bats live in the cave and at dusk, they start exiting the place, which is a spectacular sight in itself.
In the picture, you can see the area near the exit from the cave, into the jungle.
My opinion: one of the most impressive and interesting caves in Thailand. The visit is not only intriguing, but also has an adventurous side to it, which excites both children and adults.
