Despite its proximity to Bangkok center, Esplanade Shopping Center the big, modern Rachada Pisek street is out of tourists’ “regular track”, which is a shame. Along this street, you’ll find famous shopping and recreational centers such as Fortune Town – Bangkok’s best computer mall, the big new Central Rama 9 shopping mall, numerous restaurants, clubs and discotheques. We can’t possibly talk about this street without mentioning one of Bangkok’s newest, most innovative shopping and entertainment centers – “Esplanade”.
Esplanade is a 7-floor shopping center which spreads across more than 100,000 square meters. Built according to the modern “Artetainment” idea, the Esplanade has no main anchor store, but rather a wide range of “boutique shops” as well as a huge variety of entertainment and recreational centers and facilities – including state of the art cinemas, a modern bowling venue, an ice skating rink and more.
Unlike many shopping centers in downtown Bangkok, Esplanade focuses on leisure and entertainment, which makes it an ideal place to visit if you are travelling with children and teenagers. Some stores focus on young fashion, extreme sport etc. Meanwhile, Esplanade’s basement floor is a culinary celebration with various modern restaurants including many Japanese restaurants.
In terms of entertainment, leisure and recreation – Esplanade’s highlight is the modern “Cineplex” (cinema complex) which includes 12 theaters and 3,000 seats. Esplanade also offers an innovative, state-of-the-art performance hall with 1500 seats. You can also find here a hi-tech bowling alley with 26 tracks, called the Blu-O Rhythm & Bowl, the Sub Zero ice-skating rink, which is also suitable for small children, the Mini-Land computer game hall, a tennis training facility for toddlers, Toys R Us store and more.
As I mentioned, Esplanade has various designated shops focused on young fashion and various sports that are popular among youth, such as cycling, surfing, rollerblading and skateboard. One of the most interesting shops is called NY LA, which offers – apart from a wide range of products – a spacious skateboard training facility, in the back part of the store, where visitors can practice their skills and take classes with a qualified instructor. Soon, I plan to post an article about this store, as well as a review of the Sub-Zero ice rink.
Opening Hours: Esplanade is open daily from 10:00 to 22:00
Directions: Esplanade can be easily reached via subway. The closest station is just a few meters away, in Thai Cultural Center, in a short distance (of 3 stops) from Sukhumvit. Use exit no #3.
As usual, you can enjoy the Esplanade presentation, and get a glimpse of the place!
