Saxophone Pub

by Dr. David

Saxophone Pub , The Saxophone pub is one of the most famous pubs in Bangkok, an old-timer hosting live, high quality music by wonderful Saxophone pubmusicians – masters of Jazz, Rock, Blues and other music styles. The renowned pub hosts famous musicians who come to visit Thailand as part of their far-east tours, and play alongside local performers, to entertain the satisfied audience.

One of the regular musicians (who performs every Monday at midnight) is Mr. Koh, who is also known as Saxman – a world renowned Saxophonist and a gifted composer who composed many songs for some of the best singers in Thailand; he performs in some of the most famous Jazz festivals in the world. Mr. Koh is a very friendly, humble person, and I’d like to briefly refer to him later in this article.

At any event, the medium-sized, classically designed Saxophone club features unique walls, which display art works and illustrations by local artists. Throughout the night, the bands change and music styles vary, so check the artistic program for every evening here, on the club’s website.

The Saxophone pub offers a rich menu with a wide selection of Thai and western food, which I must say, is delicious. Additionally, there is a wide variety of beers, drinks and cocktails, and the entry is free of charge!

Opening hours: The Saxophone pub opens every night, from 6 PM to 2 AM

Arrival: the Saxophone pub is located in Victory Monument plaza. You can easily get there by taking the Skytrain (BTS) Sukhumvit Line, and getting off at the right side of Victory Monument. The pub is ‘at 6 o’clock’ from the plaza, on the right side, some 100 meters from the stop. It is located in a small alley near the plaza, and if you’ll ask any local, he’ll direct you to the place.

On a personal note – as I’ve previously mentioned, Mr. Koh, one of the most famous saxophonists in the world, performs at the Saxophone pub every Monday at midnight. He’s a personal acquaintance of mine, a lovely, humble person who composed wonderful music for his own albums, as well as for some of the best performers in Thailand (including Jennifer Kim for instance). Hearing him play and watching him perform is an unforgettable experience which I highly recommend to you all.

Out of the various pieces available on YouTube, I’ve chosen 8000 miles away (which you will also hear in the attached clip), along with the lovely song he wrote and play –  prayer. In addition, I have captured and edited a small clip in one of Mr. Koh’s concerts at the pub, which took place on January 2012. Saxman performs there together with my good friend, the excellent American trumpeter Steve Canon – to whom I’d like to dedicate this clip which I also took at the same concert.

I hope you’ll enjoy this great music!!
